About Atascosa County

Cattle country and strawberry fields just south of San Antonio

Atascosa County was established in 1856 from part of Bexar County and is named for the Atascosa River, which drains the county toward the southeast. The land is rolling brush country, long used for cattle, and Pleasanton, the largest city, calls itself the Birthplace of the Cowboy. The Longhorn Museum on TX-97 tells that story, and ranching still shapes much of the county outside town.

Five cities share the county. Jourdanton is the county seat, Pleasanton sits on US-281 and the Atascosa River, Poteet is home to the Poteet Strawberry Festival, and Lytle and Charlotte anchor the northwest and southwest corners. Unincorporated communities include Leming, Christine, Campbellton and Peggy. Interstate 37 crosses the eastern side of the county, and I-35 clips the northwest corner near Lytle.

Prices are the main draw. Redfin's recent median sale price was about $231,000, well below most of the San Antonio metro. Buyers can find older homes in town, new entry-level subdivisions in Pleasanton, homes on a third of an acre or more, and larger ranch tracts. Some areas also sit in the Eagle Ford Shale region, so mineral rights and pipeline easements are worth reviewing on rural purchases.
