About New Braunfels

A German river town that grew into a city

Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels led German immigrants to the banks of the Comal River in 1845, and the town still carries that heritage in its street names, its Sophienburg Museum and the ten days of Wurstfest each November. The city sits on the Balcones Escarpment, where the Hill Country drops to the Blackland Prairie, and it spans two counties: most of New Braunfels is in Comal County, with neighborhoods east of I-35 reaching into Guadalupe County.

Water defines daily life here. Comal Springs rises inside Landa Park and feeds the Comal River, which runs about 2.5 miles through town before joining the Guadalupe. Summer weekends bring tubers to both rivers, and the original Schlitterbahn waterpark sits on the Comal near downtown. A short drive north, the Gruene Historic District wraps around Gruene Hall, which opened in 1878 and still books live music most nights.

Growth is the other story. New Braunfels was one of the fastest-growing cities in the country between 2010 and 2020, and large master-planned communities such as Veramendi and Mayfair are adding thousands of homes. Buyers can choose between older homes near downtown and Landa Park, river-adjacent properties around Gruene, newer subdivisions along TX-46 and FM 306, and acreage tracts in the surrounding Comal County countryside.

What stands out

Why people choose New Braunfels

  1. Comal River and Landa Park

Comal Springs rises inside Landa Park, and the spring-fed river stays close to 72 to 73 degrees year round. The park has more than 50 acres with a miniature train, paddle boats, mini golf and the Panther Canyon trail.

  2. Gruene Hall

Built in 1878, Gruene Hall bills itself as the oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas. It anchors the Gruene Historic District, a cluster of shops, restaurants and wineries above the Guadalupe River.

  3. Wurstfest

What began in 1961 as a one-day sausage festival is now a ten-day celebration of German food, music and dancing every November at the Wurstfest grounds next to Landa Park.

  4. Tubing the Guadalupe

Outfitters along River Road and in Gruene shuttle tubers and paddlers on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Dam, while the city tube chute at Prince Solms Park is a summer tradition on the Comal.

  5. Natural Bridge Caverns

About 20 minutes west of downtown, Natural Bridge Caverns offers guided tours of large show caves plus above-ground attractions. The caverns were discovered in 1960 and sit in Comal County between New Braunfels and San Antonio.

  6. Between Two Metros

I-35 puts San Antonio and Austin within commuting range, and the city has its own employers, including both school districts, Schlitterbahn and a large Walmart distribution center.
