About Boerne

A Hill Country county seat with San Antonio at its doorstep

Boerne (pronounced "Bernie") was settled in 1849 by German Freethinkers and platted in 1852, named for the writer Ludwig Börne. It is the seat of Kendall County, and its historic core still follows Main Street and Cibolo Creek. The Hill Country Mile, a 1.1-mile walking route linking downtown shops, galleries and River Road Park, is the center of daily life, and the Boerne Village Band, organized in 1860, still performs German music around town.

The city has grown quickly. The Census Bureau counted 17,850 residents in 2020 and estimated about 24,000 by mid-2025, a gain of roughly a third in five years. Most of that growth has landed in master-planned communities such as Esperanza on the east side and in newer subdivisions along the I-10 and TX-46 corridors, while older limestone and frame homes close to Main Street change hands less often.

Buyers here are usually choosing between three settings: in-town homes near the plaza and schools, newer construction inside city limits, and acreage or gated golf communities such as Cordillera Ranch and Tapatio Springs just outside them. Boerne ISD serves the city and much of the surrounding county, and I-10 puts north San Antonio's job centers, medical district and airport within a 30 to 40 minute drive.

What stands out

Why people choose Boerne

  1. The Hill Country Mile

A 1.1-mile pedestrian route through downtown that ties Main Street's shops and restaurants to River Road Park and Cibolo Creek. Most of the city's festivals and holiday events happen along it.

  2. Cibolo Center for Conservation

More than 100 acres of prairie, marsh, creekside woodland and trails off City Park Road, plus the historic Herff-Rozelle Farm. It runs nature programs and a regular farmers market.

  3. Boerne City Lake Park

The reservoir behind John D. Reed Dam, completed in 1978, sits northwest of town. Locals go there for kayaking, fishing, the disc golf course and sunset walks along the shoreline.

  4. Boerne Village Band

Organized in 1860, it bills itself as the oldest continuously organized German band outside Germany. It still performs around town, including concerts on Main Plaza.

  5. Caverns Nearby

Cascade Caverns sits about 3 miles southeast of downtown and Cave Without a Name about 10 miles northeast. Both offer guided tours, and Cave Without a Name hosts underground concerts.

  6. German Freethinker Roots

Limestone buildings, the Kendall County Courthouse and the Kuhlmann-King Historical House reflect the town's 1850s German settlement. Main Plaza remains the civic center for concerts and markets.
