About Wilson County

Farm towns and one-acre lots southeast of San Antonio

Wilson County was formed in 1860 from parts of Bexar and Karnes counties. Sutherland Springs, a mineral-springs resort town on Cibolo Creek, was the first county seat before the government moved to Floresville after the Civil War. Floresville's courthouse dates to 1884, and the town still fills its courthouse square every October for the Floresville Peanut Festival, a nod to the peanut farming that once defined the area.

The San Antonio River crosses the county from northwest to southeast, and Cibolo Creek runs through La Vernia and Sutherland Springs. Outside the towns, the land is a mix of pasture, post oak and pecan bottoms. Near Floresville, Rancho de las Cabras was the ranch outpost for Mission Espada and is now part of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.

Most buyers here want land without a long drive. La Vernia, on US-87, and Floresville, on US-181, are both within about 40 minutes of downtown San Antonio, and new subdivisions around them are often built on homesites of three-quarters of an acre to an acre. Poth, Stockdale and the rural communities of Kosciusko, Pandora and Union offer smaller towns and larger tracts further out.
