About Selma

An old stage stop at the busiest crossroads in the northeast metro

Selma was settled in 1847 by German and Polish immigrants along Cibolo Creek. In 1849 John S. Harrison built a stagecoach stop here on the San Antonio to Austin line, and both the restored Selma Stage Stop and his limestone house, now on the National Register of Historic Places, still stand. The town incorporated in 1964 and stayed tiny for decades, with 788 residents as late as 2000.

Growth came with the I-35 and Loop 1604 interchange. Retama Park opened as a horse-racing track in 1995, The Forum shopping center followed in 2000 on the Selma and Live Oak line, and the population climbed to 10,952 by 2020 and about 12,000 by mid-2025. The city covers only about 5 square miles, and much of its land is commercial, so the residential share is small and inventory at any one time is limited.

Selma spans three counties and three school districts. Retama Park and nearby subdivisions such as Retama Springs are in the Bexar County portion, while City Hall on Corporate Drive is on the Guadalupe County side and a northern sliver reaches Comal County. Many homes with a Selma mailing address are actually in Schertz, Universal City or Live Oak, so it pays to check the city and appraisal district for each listing.
