About Kendall County

German towns and limestone hills along I-10

Kendall County sits just northwest of San Antonio, where I-10 climbs into the Hill Country. German immigrants settled Boerne and Comfort in the 1850s, and both towns still have stone buildings from that era along their main streets. The county was organized in 1862 and named for journalist George Wilkins Kendall, who ran sheep on a ranch near Boerne.

Boerne is the county seat and the center of most daily life, with the Main Plaza, the Hill Country Mile of shops and restaurants, and Cibolo Creek running through town. Around it are master-planned communities such as Esperanza, the 9,100-acre Cordillera Ranch along the Guadalupe River, and older golf and acreage neighborhoods like Tapatio Springs. West on I-10, Comfort has a well-preserved historic district, and the small communities of Sisterdale, Kendalia, Waring and Bergheim are mostly ranch land and large-acreage homes.

This is the priciest of the San Antonio area counties. Redfin put the median sale price at about $618K for the three months ending August 2026, and the 2020 to 2024 Census survey estimated that close to 80% of homes are owner-occupied. Buyers here tend to be looking for more land, Hill Country views, and an easy drive into San Antonio on I-10.
