About Schertz

A railroad stop turned three-county suburb

Schertz takes its name from the Alsatian Schertz family, who settled along Cibolo Creek in the 1840s. The area went by Cibolo Pit and then Cut Off before the railroad arrived in 1876 and the name Schertz stuck in 1899. The city incorporated in 1958, and its growth has been tied to Randolph Field, opened next door in the early 1930s and now part of Joint Base San Antonio.

Today the city spreads across about 32 square miles in three counties. Most of it, including the original town and the civic center on Schertz Parkway, is in Guadalupe County, with Cibolo Creek forming the line with Bexar County to the south and west, and a smaller northern section in Comal County. The 2020 Census counted 42,002 residents, and the Census Bureau estimated about 46,000 by mid-2025.

Housing runs from 1960s and 1970s homes near Randolph and FM 78 to established golf-course neighborhoods like Northcliffe and newer master-planned communities such as The Crossvine and Saddlebrook Ranch. The county line matters to buyers because appraisal district, tax rates and even school district change depending on location. Distribution and manufacturing along I-35, including Amazon, Sysco, FedEx Ground and Caterpillar, have made Schertz a job center as well as a commuter town.

  2. Crescent Bend Nature Park

About 180 acres along Cibolo Creek on land that was once a flood-prone neighborhood. A 1.6-mile loop trail, creek access and birding make it the city's main nature escape.

  3. Cibolo Creek Trails

Cut-Off Park's 58 acres of heritage oaks give access to about six miles of primitive trails along Cibolo Creek.

  4. 4th of July Jubilee

The city's signature event marked its 50th year in 2026 with carnival nights at Pickrell Park, a downtown parade, a 5K, live music and fireworks.

  5. I-35 Job Base

Since 2021, Amazon, Sysco, FedEx, UPS and Caterpillar have located or expanded in Schertz, adding warehouse, logistics and manufacturing jobs close to home.

  6. Pickrell Park

The 17-acre park near the original town has a seasonal outdoor pool, basketball, playscapes and a walking trail, and it hosts much of the Jubilee.
